Old Testament: Sir and Sap (reconstruction)

Parchment — 11 fols. partly fragmentary — Mondsee — s. IX1/4

Several parchment fragments from an early Carolingian Bible, written in Mondsee. Reconstruction using fragments: Vienna, ÖNB, Cod. Ser. n. 3753 (2 fols.), Cod. 15347 (4 fols.), Fragm. 6 (3 fols.), Fragm. 10 (2 fols.), Fragm. 852 (9 strips, 8 pieces) and binding waste in Cod. 3712.

Script: Early Carolingian minuscule. Two forms of a (Carolingian and open cc-a); many ligatures including: ri, re, or, er, en, ec, nt, and ex; oblique abbreviation strokes. This script, referred to as "Psalter-Stufe" by B. Bischoff, can also be seen in other manuscripts from Mondsee, such as Vienna, ÖNB, Cod. 732 and Cod. Ser. n. 2065.

History: The fragments served as binding waste in manuscripts bound in Mondsee in the 15th century. According to the ÖNB documentation and codicological observation (shelfmarks, glue residues etc.) Cod. 3716 was the host volume of Fragm. 10 (sewing guards) and to fols. 2 and 4 in Cod. 15347 (pastedowns); Cod. 3666 was the host volume of Fragm. 6 (sewing guards) and fols. 1 and 3 in Cod. 15347 (pastedowns). The bifolium now preserved as Cod. Ser. n. 3753 served as pastedown in Cod. 1477. Fragm. 854 was detached from Cod. 3712.

Parchment — 17 pieces from 4 leaves fols. — Mondsee — s. IX1/4

Fragments from Sirach used as sewing centres in Mondsee bindings.

Fragm. 854-7 to 854-9 also belong together and were originally the margin of a column. The text (uitae hominis substantia) is a subchapter to Sir 39:31. Fragm. 854-5 and 854-6 unidentified, belonging to the same manuscript based on the writing characteristics. The original leaves were cut to 9 horizontal stripes and 8 other fragments.

Sapientia (fragments)

FragmentariumFacsimileLibrary catalogue

Parchment — 3 fols. (partial) — Mondsee — s. IX1/4

The fragments served as sewing guards in the same host volume (Cod. 3666) as the Sirach fragments now preserved in Cod. 15347. This together with the palaeographical similarities between the fragments suggest they were part of the same codex containing the Old Testament texts of Sirach and Sapientia.

Support: 29 strips, assembled into 3 single sheets.

History: Cod. 3666 was the host volume of Fragm. 6 (sewing guards).
